Giving a bed bath at home

How to bathe someone who can’t leave the bed: supplies, warm water around 106°F, privacy and warmth, washing face to feet, front to back, no-rinse cloths, and checking the skin.

For someone who can’t safely get out of bed, a daily bed bath keeps skin healthy, controls odor and simply feels good. It’s also a good moment to check the skin. This note covers how to do it comfortably and with dignity.

Gather the supplies

Gloves; a large basin of warm water, about 106°F; regular or no-rinse soap; two washcloths, or at least seven no-rinse cloths; a towel, lotion, deodorant and a comb.1 Pre-moistened bath packs, warmed first, work too.1

Before you start

If moving hurts, give pain medicine first and let it take effect.1 Raise the bed to a height that protects your back, warm the room and close doors and windows.1 Tell the person what you’re about to do, and encourage them to wash what they can.1

Face to feet

Uncover only the area you’re washing.1 Start with the face, then work down toward the feet, then roll the person to wash the back.1 Use a little soap, rinse it all off, and pat dry, including skin folds.1 Apply lotion before covering each area.1

Private areas

Use fresh warm water and a clean cloth, wash the genitals first and then the buttocks, always front to back.1

With no-rinse cloths

Use a fresh cloth for each area and let the skin air dry; no rinsing or lotion is needed.1 Don’t use chlorhexidine cloths on the face.1

Check the skin

Look for redness or sores, especially in skin folds and over bony areas, and call the provider if you find any.1 A home health aide can help with bathing, and a nurse can check any skin changes.
